Contradiciendo su propia teoría de que no existen motivos sociales para justificar el crimen, se diría que Dostoievski ha puesto en esta novela todo su afán de acumular y sacar a la luz precisamente las circunstancias sociales que, a cada paso, empujan a la persona a llegar al crimen, aunque sea para afirmar su “yo” y probarse a sí mismo que es un hombre.
